The St. Kitts Cruise Pier project is the second cruise pier to be constructed at Port Zante. St. Kitts and Nevis is a popular cruise and vacation destination, with the former being the larger of the two islands. Once completed, the cruise pier will accommodate two of the largest world-class vessels and is expected to enlarge economic opportunities for both St. Kitts and Nevis.
The project consists of demolishing three existing mooring dolphins and construction of the new pier which is founded on driven pile. American Bridge’s scope of work consists of driving 48” steel pipe pile; cast in place concrete caps; installation of owner furnished deck slabs, fenders and bollards; installation of mooring and breasting dolphins, catwalks, and cathodic protection. The pier will be 60-feet-wide and 670-feet-long and is designed to withstand a one in 100-year cycle storm.
Equipment used to perform the scope of work includes, but is not limited to, two 250 ton cranes mounted on spud barges, 60 ton hydraulic crane, carpenter barges, tug boat, pile driving and concrete tools. Challenges in building this project include construction of a deep water berth in open ocean conditions, remote island location, and limited experienced available labor force. AB has relied on vast Caribbean experience to plan the work and supply logistics to overcome the challenges. Additionally, AB is mentoring the local labor force to give them the skills to perform the tasks safely.
